Gary Bennett

A CONSUMMATE PROFESSIONAL

Although he started his career in commercial banking, gaining a good knowledge of the SME market, Gary changed career paths 8 years ago and hasn’t looked back since finding his passion for insurance.

In 2015, Gary joined a long-standing Group Life Provider as a Business Development Manager. It’s here that he gained his GR1 qualification and Underwriting Mandate, and later became the Commercial Manager. Much to our delight, however, he moved across to Unisure in September 2023 as Business Development Manager (BDM) in the UK office.

“It has been an exciting first few months, and I love the dynamic and agile way in which the company operates,” Gary enthuses. “Unisure’s openness to alternative opinions and methods of working has really impressed me, and this allows us to be nimble and flexible in growing our UK footprint.”

As a BDM, Gary is an absolute natural, and even though he’s a self-confessed introvert, his ability to read a broker’s personality and accommodate his pitch accordingly is a sought-after skill in this business.

“I was fortunate enough to partake in ‘Insights’ training a few years ago and this has helped me recognise people’s different personality traits,” Gary explains. “Some brokers just want the facts and figures, quickly and concisely, whereas others would prefer to build things more slowly and it is much more about the relationship than providing the most competitive quote. I have a lot of fun recognising those traits and doing my best to adapt in the moment.”

While we’re well-known as a company for our international products and our ability to support more niche risks, a large part of Gary’s focus will be raising Unisure’s profile amongst brokers across the UK. It’s a challenge he’s looking forward to, especially because he believes so strongly in what Unisure is trying to achieve.

“The fact that everyone in the business has the same philosophy of protecting individuals and their families really resonates with me,” he says. “We are small enough to care, and we have the strong relationships in place to ensure that we can deliver on our promises.”

Aware of the challenges that exist in this highly competitive segment of the insurance market, Gary is taking things in his stride and applying his cyclist’s philosophy to the road ahead.

“Any targets can look daunting on the 1st of January when you start the year but breaking them down into smaller goals is definitely the way forward,” he says. “It’s the same when I’m out cycling. 200 miles in a day sounds horrendous, but when you break it down into 20-mile sections, you realise that you can achieve it. I’m not saying it’s easy, but no matter what income targets I need to achieve, I’ll be tackling them month by month, deal by deal.”

It’s wonderful to have you on board, Gary. You’re a consummate professional and we know that our UK brokers are in very good hands.
