Jamie Fitzsimmons

A ‘LIFER’ IF EVER THERE WAS ONE

When it comes to building a career in insurance, Jamie Fitzsimmons is what you could fondly call a ‘lifer’. Until now, where he has recently joined The Unisure Group as Head of Asia in our Individual Life division, Jamie has built an impressive career in and around the Lloyd’s life insurance market.

When he was 20 years old, he joined a cover holder at Lloyd’s of London called Lutine Assurance as their Office Junior. Within 6 months, he was promoted and eventually became a Group Life Scheme Underwriter. Five years later, he joined Lutine’s parent company, Cassidy Davis (Syndicate 779), at Lloyd’s in Birmingham, where he became a Medical Underwriter.

In 2008 he relocated to London and joined Syndicate 44 at Lloyd’s, later becoming a Senior Underwriter. When Syndicate 44 went into run-off in 2019 and stopped writing new business, he took on the challenge of Run-Off Manager, exploring and developing various solutions to the business’s run-off issues, which led to his initial discovery of Unisure.

A few years after first making Jamie’s acquaintance, we’re delighted to welcome him to our team in our Kuala Lumpur office in Malaysia.

The role of Head of Asia represents an exciting proposition to me, full of opportunities to meet new people and acquire new skills and ways of thinking,” he says. “It’s going to entail managing staff and budgets, meeting targets, and increasing Unisure exposure in the Asian market. Unisure is a company on the rise, and I’m happy to be part of a team that has set themselves very ambitious – but achievable – targets.”

We’re confident that Jamie will be an asset to our team, not only for his wealth of experience, but also for the exceptional leadership skills that he displays.

“In my opinion, in order to be a good leader, you have to know when to be flexible and when to be firm. You must understand the idea of reflected glory within a team and realise that not every good idea has to come directly from you. Also, I think everyone has the ability to change and be better, which is why I believe that a failure of a person in a particular role is often as much as a failure of management as it is the person in question.”

Jamie has many keen interests, including history, martial arts, boxing, football, golf and science fiction, and he says that he is lucky in having achieved many of his personal milestones already.

“On a personal level, the only milestone left is that I wish to visit every continent before I die, and I still need to visit Africa and South America in order to do this. With regards to my career, I want to be able to look back and feel that I have made a positive contribution to the organisation I work for.”

With Unisure offices in Johannesburg, South Africa, we’re confident that Jamie will be ticking Africa off his bucket list sooner rather than later.

We cannot wait to see the ways in which you help grow the Individual Life division, Jamie. You’re an asset to our leadership team and we look forward to working with you.
